Facing History

Teachers at Bell use an age appropriate approach to teaching the tragedy of the Holocaust.  In our upper grades we have a longstanding partnership with an organization called Facing History and Ourselves.  The mission of Facing History is that through education, we can combat racism, anti-Semitism, and bigotry while helping students make informed, ethical decisions.  The organization opened a Chicago office in 1990 and since then, has provided training to over 3,000 local educators.  The program provides a rigorous examination of events that led to the Holocaust, as well as more recent examples of hatred and violence.  The training assists students in looking at history as it relates to violence and hatred, while deepening their ability to relate history to their own lives.
