Bell School Equity Mission Statement
Bell Elementary is dedicated to the equity and inclusion of all students. We believe in providing a safe environment for every student; affirming a healthy identity of self and celebrating diversity; promoting honest conversations around inequity and bias while upholding antiracist ideas and policies; and continually reflecting on the curriculum, instruction, and culture of the Bell Community to ensure equity for all.
School Improvement Plan (CIWP)
Equity is a significant part of Bell’s Continuous Improvement Work Plan, a document written by members of the Bell community every two years that outlines goals for the school and administration. One of the priorities in the current plan includes the development of an ongoing analysis of curricular resources to ensure cultural relevance and representation for all students.
Staff Equity Committee
The committee is made up of staff, administrators, and teachers from multiple grade levels who teach children from each of Bell’s three programs: Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Neighborhood, and Options. They participate in monthly meetings to promote equity for all of Bell’s students and staff and coordinate with the Bell Parent and Caregiver Equity Group. This year's areas of focus include redesigning interior and exterior spaces to make sure they are culturally responsive and meet the needs of all students and equitable grading practices.
Parent and Caregiver Equity Group
Parents and members of the Bell community came together in 2020 to form the Bell Parent and Caregiver Equity Group, which aims to promote equity and share learning and growing opportunities to make our community stronger.
A core group of parent and community volunteers meets monthly, and regularly engages with the administration, the LSC, and the Teacher and Staff Equity Committee to ensure a multi-faceted and coordinated approach to fostering an equitable environment. It also holds periodic open-door community meetings (see the Bell school calendar), and hosts other events for community discussion and engagement.
Read more about the group’s goals, and its mission statement and vision, on its website. The Parent and Caregiver Equity Group also posts regularly on its social media pages, all @BellEquity (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram). Email the group at [email protected].
